My first baby is due anytime, and I’m scared I won’t be able to breastfeed. I’m hearing all kinds of “do this, you should buy that” advice, and I’m confused - what’s really important in a good pump
Remember: You’ll literally have your hands full with a new baby, you may be extremely tired, and breastfeeding is a very emotional thing. Many moms get frustrated when it doesn’t work right away, and doubts creep in, big time.
The 2 major kinds are manual or electric breast pumps. Manual is quieter, takes more work, and you can’t pump both breasts at the same time. Electric is more expensive, double pumps can pump both breasts at once, and pumping is a lot easier.
All pumps have about the same sucking strength – what matters is HOW the pump best mimics how your baby feeds. The 2-phase models are best at getting the most milk out the easiest.
